Pemba Island Liveaboards

Pemba has numerous smaller beautiful outlying islands off the main island that remain completely untouched, with untrodden sandy beaches.

Pemba with undulating hills and deep verdant valleys covered with dense clove, coconut and mango plantations lies just 50km north of Zanzibar and so is easy to cruise to by charter yacht.

There are only 4 hotels or resorts on Pemba Island, so you won’t be surrounded by hordes of holiday makers on a "beach" holiday. Because of this ‘exclusivity’, the island remains a pristine tropical wilderness and this extends to the surrounding marine environment too.

Spending time on a yacht in these waters is superb and you can sometimes have the whole place practically to yourself. You will almost certainly not see another yacht during your Pemba Island yacht charter cruise.

Pemba Island Liveaboards

Cruise to Pemba Island on a liveaboard yacht and experience stunning marine life, spectacular lagoons, tropical islands and a lush rainforest in the north! Cruising this beautiful island from one of our catamaran yachts, truly feels like you are on an adventure or expedition into an untouched Paradise!

Our Pemba yacht live-aboard charters depart from Nungwi or Stone Town. Once we have slipped our mooring, we spend the day sailing up the Pemba Channel crossing to the southern point of Pemba Island. Enjoy delicious food, and ice cold drinks whilst fishing along the way in the hopes of catching dinner or just relax on the trampolines, watching the dolphins surf our bow wave.

We spend our days cruising the west coast of Pemba Island fishing, diving and exploring the spectacular islands and inland lagoons that make the Pemba Island such an amazing destination.

Pemba Island Big Game Fishing

The big game fishing in the Pemba channel is as good as it gets! There are no less than 6 varieties of Billfish in the Pemba Channel, huge sharks (Mako, Tiger, Thresher and Hammerhead to name a few), Tuna, large Wahoo, King Mackerel, Dorado, Barracuda, Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna plus many others.

Furthermore, close to shore along the west coast, immediately off Pemba’s beaches, regular catches of lesser Game Fish species include Rainbow Runners, Bonito, Skipjack, King Mackerel, Barracuda and Wahoo.

Additionally, in peak Marlin season, the billfish and tunas move right up to the coast line making Pemba very interesting for fishing enthusiasts.

Pemba Island Scuba Diving

The waters around the islands of Pemba are among the richest and most exciting in the world and home to thousands of species of tropical fish and other exotic marine life. Around 180 species of coral have been found present in the Zanzibar Islands and among them Pemba has examples of almost all coral species to be found in Africa.

Pemba is a SCUBA Divers Dream and we offer scuba diving cruises on our catamaran yachts!

Typically, most of the dives in Pemba are wall and drift dives. For this reason, some of the more spectacular and challenging sites require an ADVANCED OPEN WATER diving qualification. However, there are more than enough dive site options for OPEN WATER divers to enjoy.

Finally, the area’s pristine coral is home to some of the widest varieties of marine life, including: Giant & Pickhandle Baraccuda, Wahoo, Karambezi, Dorado, Trevally, Humphead Wrasse, Whale Shark, Manta Rays, Bottlenose & Spinner Dolphin numerous varieties of shark (including Hammerheads) to mention but a few and thousands of species of tropical reef fish.

Our dive yachts are fully equipped with dive gear and on board Dive Masters to take care of you on your Pemba Island dive liveaboard.

Tourism on Pemba Island

Unlike Zanzibar, Pemba is relatively untouched by tourism and has barely changed in the last three hundred years. For the most part, the ox & cart is still the fastest mode of transport around the island, famous for its clove plantations. An 18th century Fort guards the island’s main town of Chake Chake which sites in a hill with a view to the west over a stunning bay and the tiny island of Mesali.

Pemba Island is a similar size to Zanzibar, but there are only a handfull of resorts on lodges, which means there is little pressure from tourism.
